Wild Rocks - Dangerous?

I am slowly setting up a Axolotl tank. For the actual tank decorations I want to use rocks and wood from a local river. I find the idea of paying $6 a pound for rocks at the local pet store really unattractive. Since I have access to take rocks and logs from the river for free that is what I am wanting to use but I don't want to put anything dangerous in my tank. Can I just clean the rocks a great deal and use them? If so can I use any kind of chemical cleaner? Surely if I clean them until the very souls of the rocks are spotless they'll be ok to use in the tank...

Sorry for being new to the site and unable to find the search function.

EDIT: Found the search function - highlighted conveniently along the topmost banner-bar-thing. Found the info I needed!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
