Hi Everyone.

In the last 2 weeks Sunny has been floating non stop, gills pointing forward and trying to jump out of the tank non stop. Hes just been super stressed out.

He has a 3ft tank that has plants and sand. A chiller that is set to 17degrees running 24/7 and is fed 3 earthworms a week. In the last few weeks he has had new plants that were quarantined, 5 cherry shrimp that were quarantined and he ate about a week ago. There is no lighting on the tank and my tank has been running for a year and is fully cycled and is tested regularly including today.

About 4 weeks ago he spent 2 weeks in the fridge but went back into his tank with no hassles and then started this behaviour some time afterwards.

He is now floating in a half moon shape with his side hitting the top of the water, opening and closing his mouth also

I have no idea what this whole "trying to get out" business is!
Any suggestions or things I could look into further.

I would strongly suspect an issue with water quality. What are your ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels? Also, are you adding an agent to remove the chlorine and chloramines from the water?

I used prime and My ammonia was zero, nitrites were zero and a very very low reading of nitrate.

Sunny passed away last night, I did all i could for him. I am absolutly shattered. I have had Sunny for 3 years and moved several times with me and has been a constant companion. R.I.P Sunny Boy.

oh my gosh..........blaze Im sooooo sorry.......Sunny will have fun chasing the big worm in the sky

I'm really sorry for your loss. Sadly, sometimes there's just nothing we can do. :(

So sorry to read this, hope your ok x

It has been a very devastating weekend between Sunny dying, my boyfriend having emergency surgery on his perforated appendix, my aunt being diagnosed with bowel cancer and my dog being at the vet to have a severely infected tooth removed.

 Soooo sorry to read your posts about "Sunny"... obviously there was nothing you could had done. It makes you feel so helpless. Cheer up, blaze, we are all thinking of you! ;)

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
