P. ruber question.

So I got a P. ruber about a week ago, don't know exactly what subspecies but I was wondering if they are usually active in captivity? I haven't seen it since I got it and I think that after a week maybe it would be a little used to its new environment. I have a mostly aquatic setup with flat rocks and a cold current and plenty of hides. The room he's kept in never gets above 70. He likes to eat though the pin head crickets have been disappearing and their not floating in the water. I'll post pics of him and his setup later.

There is no such thing as an active caudate. If you are looking for a pet that "does stuff" you are in for a bit of a surprise. Caudates live like I live- in the dark with minimal activity leaving their lairs only for food, reproduction, the occasional territorial defense(not all species) and/or illness.

    with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

    Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

    Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
