I recently purchased a p.ruber and I had a few questions. Are they fairly active? I've had mine for a little more than a week and i have only seen it once. I keep it in a mostly aquatic setup with cool water and a current ill post pics later. The room it is kept in rarely gets above the mid sixties. Also what is the best food for them I have been giving mine pinhead crickets but it doesn't seem to be interested in them because i still see a lot in its tank.

I've seen one in captivity, but never had one myself. From what I've heard, it's likely to remain fairly secretive. I'd recommend trying earthworms - chopped nightcrawlers for example. Don't use troutworms or red wiggler worms.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
