Hi everyone,

I just wanted to introduce myself. My name is Lara and I am originally from Australia but have been living in Japan for 10+ years. We have just bought a 1year old Axie and my 5 year old daughter called him (I think it is a 'he'!). We had a baby one from my eldest son's school but he died as did all of the other babies at the school.

Cesar is awesome. He is so cute and extremely interactive with me. He eats from my hand and sometimes likes to just climb on me when I am holding his food in the tank. We got him a 45 cm tank and am guessing I should get him some more plants. Don't know if I should get real ones or fake ones.....

Anyway, just thought I would say hi.

Hi Lara and welcome to the forum. Plants aren't necessary but hiding places are. Substrate is also important. Bare bottom or fine sand...but never small gravel which can easily be ingested. You have a nice size tank for one animal.

Thanks Jan. We have a bare bottom tank and he seems to like it. We have two hideys for him. One is a terracotta 'tunnel' and the other is a small flower pot thing. He sleeps in the tunnel though. It just looks really bare so was thinking of heading up to the per shop with the kids tomorrow to get a few fake plants for him. He doesn't hide much though except when he is sleepy. As soon as he hears my voice he flies out and quickly comes to the side of the tank. I have no idea how much to feed him either as he is always looking for food!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
