Could anyone explain to me why my newt would shy away from sunlight or artificial light. However when a candle is placed in front or near the tank he becomes fixated on it and will come out of hiding and sit in the open (very rare for him to do this) staring at the candle and sometimes scratching at the glass towards the candle.

Flames move around and most newts/salamanders are attracted to movement because it sometimes equals food :D

Oh, sounds like it makes sense, only thing is, he is absolutely terrified of live food. He shys away from anything moving in his tank. Even small worms!

Well then. Maybe he's just an oddball? I'm sure it helps that the candle is dimmer than a tank light/the sun. Most newts don't like bright lights.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
