Hi Everyone!!
I brought two Axolotl's last Friday, a golden male (Charles) and a black female (Darwin), 3 days later on Sunday, Darwin laid eggs all over the tank.. which sent me google searching like crazy to find out what to do as I was not expecting them to breed so fast :) This googling lead me to this website. There is some excellent useful threads on here that I've read so far... So I look forward to reading some more, and learning more about these beautiful creatures.

As I write this Charles is madly digging in the corner of the tank... not sure why, he's already eaten 3 worms tonight... and Darwin is just stretched out resting on top of the roof of their little house... They are so entertaining!!

Welcome to the website from another Aussie. It must be eggciting to have them breeding so quickly, there is lots of useful information here on the site and people are really friendly when it comes to sharing their knowledge and experiences of keeping caudates.

I too have an axolotl and I also have fish for whom I have just bought a new tank. These pets really grow on you..

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
