Hello Everyone,
My name is Karen and I live in a small town in SW Montana. I’m 50 something and married to a relatively tolerant husband. I work for the State at the only DMV in the state, in a stuffy, overly warm cubicle. Ron, my husband is a long-haul truck driver and is gone from home usually a couple of weeks or more at a time, so it’s me and the critters most of the time. I’ve been an animal person since I was born, my first word was “Kitty”. I’ve had the usual warm-blooded pets, cats, dogs, birds, rodents. I started with amphibians when I was in grade-school, wild toads, tree frogs and newts. Then when I got into high school, of course other things became a priority.
I’ve recently became a tortoise mom to two Hermann’s hatchlings, Ona & Ari. I also have a vivarium with Fire Belly Toads. I first met an Axolotl about 30 some years ago (yikes!) and was mesmerized. I found this site through the Frog Forum, I’m also researching Dumpy Whites Tree Frogs, and read how popular they (Axolotls) are here and renewed my desire to add one to my family. The “family” consists of 3 horses, 4 dogs, 1 cat, 2 tortoises, and 5 toads.
I want to thank John for this site and the FF, they are a rich source of information and the members are the most welcoming.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
