Molch got out the ol' watercolor and painted some of her newts.

1) a group of Smooth newts
2) three alpine (apuanus) boys in full breeding glory
3) a courting pair of alpines
4) a courting pair of blue-tailed fire bellies (chenggongensis)

:)

Wow, Molch, i´m really impressed O_O Those are beautiful.
Congratulations, you trully have a talent! Thank you for sharing :)

thanks! I haven't done prints yet but am looking into how to do that. Stay tuned; I might make more paintings of other species :)

I'd buy prints too! I have started a newt art collection to decorate my hallway (which is now the unofficial newt room)... only have two so far but your's are beautiful!

If you want to look into prints my partner gets his work replicated b a local print shop. Its main clients are businesses wanting letterhead paper or leaflets or whatever but the guy does canvases and prints for everyday joe too. Have a look around your local area.

Will you be selling any? I am very interested. You're a great artist.

thanks all for the interest; I've never sold any; I'm just an amateur. However, I'll look into this print business for my newt and doggie watercolors. If I get any I promise I'll make a post in the sale section ;)

Wow.. Can I send payment now?
Very talented molch.

Very impressed! If you paint any more please post them up for us all to see.

Are you taking any requests? You should do some Tylototriton, Ommatotriton and Triturus. Those species are very colorful especially the crested newts in courtship dress.

What are your methods? Still life? Or are these watercolor translations from photographs?

Awesome the art you've done molch!!! have you got more ???? :D

At first I thought this thread was called "Newts in watercooler" and I thought that was a pretty cool idea...

Those are really, really nice! You should definitely make them available as prints. If you need any tips (from a semi-professional illustrator ;) ) I have a bunch. There are places you can set them up as 'print on demand' so you don't have to pay a bunch to print a stack.

Anyway, you should definitely post more of your work (even if it doesn't have newts!)

lol - still life would be nice if only those darn newts would sit still for a while :)

I use some of my photos and my real-life newts as reference. I sometimes put a newt in a small plastic tank on the desk for a short time so I can see how it moves and how the color and shading looks. But not for long, because the bright light might stress it. Then I make a drawing on a separate paper and I erase and correct and fiddle until I like the drawing. Then I transfer the drawing onto the watercolor paper using carbon paper. That way, I have a clean drawing on the watercolor paper and no rubbing or erasing marks. Then comes the easy part, splashing on color, hehe.

I'd love to do some Triturus or Ommatotritons or helveticus. I don't have those species myself though, so I'd have to use pics from others as a reference for color and shape...

The picture of the Lissotriton group are now my background on my laptop. Hope you don't mind Molch.

Someone please get this woman a high quality picture of Ommatotriton!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
