I would say axolotls, but even better, Pleurodeles waltl.
Eastern newts can do very well and be very easy to keep, but unfortunately they seem to be suprisingly prone to fungal infections and other problems. When they do well, they do very well...but when things go wrong, they died off like flies.
Aside from that, the larger size of axolotls (or P.waltl) makes it easier to feed them since large worms tend to be easier to find than small ones.
Whatever you decide, make sure to research the species exhaustively before acquiring any animals, and have everything you need prepared well in advance.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
