Hey guys, I'm a LONG time lurker, I've had axolotls for a year now and everytime something went amiss I was on here finding people with the same problems as me, this site is amazing and I love it and you have all helped me for so long :)

I've attached photos of my axies, a wild type called Drogo (game of thrones reference haha) a white one called Tyler Durden (long story, my brother cared for them for 2 months and didnt feed them, Tyler ate three legs and a tail, though today I found out it's a girl..) and a black one called Sheba ! They're in a 70 liter tank, it's 2 foot long and I'm redecorating it on Friday with some new plants and some sand. I've been looking at tank pictures on here and they're amazing! Everyone puts in so much work :)

Anyway, that's all I wanted to say :D Have good day!

I'm surprised nobody mentioned this before but 1.) Your tank is too small for three axolotls. It's barely big enough for just one axolotl. And 2.) your substrate is deadly. I highly recommend removing it.

Welcome from a fellow Aussie, please take Kaysie's advice and look at the subtrate you have in your tank and think about the size.
I have one axie in a three foot tank and he uses the whole tank and has two hides. Each axie really needs to hides and I think there would be a shortage of space for six in a two foot tank.

Welcome fellow Aussie! Glad to hear you're getting rid of the stones (Seriously, no fun AT ALL!!), and very cute axies :)
As to the tank size (As many people have picked up on it), When you redecorate, I'd be putting in as many hides as you can- Plants as well to help with your water parameters- Have they been relatively stable so far? Having had to keep axies in a small tank thanks to our summers, you really do have to be vigilant with keeping an eye on everything...Of course, if you've got the space, you can always have a blast with upgrading and making another new environment for your axies to explore :)
Also, something I've noted (@ dad of axle) is that an axolotl will use whatever space you give them, be it a square foot or a 4ft tank (My first three went in at 11cm, and were using every nook and cranny), up until the point where they discover human media...when they will find the best viewing angle for the T.V/snack feeder and set up shop quite happily...

I believe he only got three axies...

I meant two hides per axolotl. THree axolotls times two hides each= six hides.

The names are great.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
