Another larva I recently caught, I think in a different pond. about 1 inch (2.5 cm) to the end of the tail. I admit the legs were small enough enough when I first caught it to think it was an insect larva without a case. wow.

Looks like a Notophtalmus larva to me.

I don't know much about Id'ing larvae. What about the larva make it seem to be a newt? Jim Harding at MSU suggested newt, too.

And update: It has not metamorphosed but has grown. Is there some way to get it to go through metamorphosis? In nature, if crowded and/or the pond is drying, almost certainly would metamorphose in order to avoid dying. Does anyone know know the cue that causes this?

Here are some new photos:

Let it grow. The bigger it gets before metamorphosis, the better off it will be.

The pointy snout and the stripe through the eye give it away as a Noto. The fact that you found it in Michigan helps too. Choices are pretty limited there!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
