My neighbor was fascinated with my 5 little babies so i gave him 2 and the poor little things passed away over night :(
we think the temp got a little too low for them.

How low do you think the temp got? Axolotls are generally fine as long as their water isn't frozen. They just become really lethargic.

Were they in the fridge?

Actually, I've had some axolotls in partially frozen water and I thought they were dead. I sighed, but once I saw them move, I started freaking out cos I couldn't remove the top layer of ice. They were totally fine.

Maybe it was temperature shock?

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
