My axolotl toothless just died this morning and I am unsure of the cause.

A few days ago he stopped eating and then I noticed he started floating, toothless cloaca looked a little swollen also. When I looked it up it seemed to mean toothless was constipated, I tried feeding toothless a pea/broccoli but toothless refused.

I tried fridging toothless starting yesterday keeping an eye on the temperature, I checked on toothless about 9am and toothless was fine and swimming. (No signs of poo or anything though) I checked on toothless around 12pm and noticed toothless had died. =(

What caused his death? Could he have been constipated that bad? His skin and gills shown no sign of an infection and I made sure that water wasn't too cold while he was in the fridge.

What kind of substrate did you have Toothless on?

Also, why would you try feeding broccoli and peas? This works for goldfish but axolotls are carnivores- - an earthworm may have been a better choice.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
