I am Shelly. I live in Maryland. I got an adult melanoid axolotl about a month and half ago after wanting one for years. I named it Randall (after one of the monsters in Monsters Inc.) and refer to it as "he/him" but I believe it is actually a female. I would like to get at least one more axolotl and perhaps one day have some axolotl babies. I have two dogs and a bunch of fish, but I had forgotten how cool amphibians are until I got Randall. He brings me back to some of my childhood years in North Carolina when catching wild salamanders and and newts was one of my favorite, slightly tomboyish hobbies:)

Hi Lovealotl and welcome to Caudata.org! Like you, for so many of us, our interest in caudates started in childhood.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
