they are around 5.5 inches and are on a diet of blood worms and earth worms.

will they be ok for the week, what should i do about food?

How many have you got and in what size tank? Individually they will be fine for a week without food but if you have a lot together there may be water quality issues after a week or they may start to nip at each other.

What kind of substrate? Just thinking you could add some live blackworms (if you've got a bare bottomed tank) and some freshwater shrimp (glass or red cherries- need to get them from somewhere they've been quarantined for 30 days, or quarantine them as long as possible) as backup :)
Hope you have a wonderful time!

Honestly depends on the setup at the breeders- My LFS has them set up separately in the fridge and uses the rainwater tank for them (not from their tanks), so I have no worries about them going straight in :) I'd suggest just double checking to be on the safe side, but you should be good to go!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
