Hello :)

I'm thinking about getting an axolotl and just trying to get some information about them first. I am an avid fish keeper so have a good understanding of keeping water conditions clean. My biggest concern would be it morphing into a full salamander as I have little knowledge on taking care of animals without fins or fur. I'm reading that this seems to primarily be brought on by less then ideal water conditions but is it possible this could happen under any circumstances and how likely is it to happen?

Welcome to the forum!

You shouldn't be too worried about your axolotl morphing; it's extremely rare. Chances are it will die from poor water quality before it morphs.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
