I just got my first axolotl yesterday. I named him Arlar (golden-shine) I do beleive he is a male. I'm just a little worried about him, one because I am new to this and I keep reading and reading to make sure I do everything right. He looks healthy, he doesn't do much, he likes the corners of the tank. But I do have just a few questions,

1. is it normal for axolotls to hang near the top of the tank? (he goes to the bottom too but I see him in the top or bottom corners)

2. Are plastic plants okay for my tank?

3. How full should i keep my tank?

4. I have a filter that has a waterfall I have it as low as I can and it still makes some bubbles will this upset him? If so what can I do to eliminate the bubbles without having to get a new filter.

5. What are thoughts on aquariam fans?

I'm always open to learn more!

Congratulations on your Axie and welcome. I cant answer all of your questions as new also. But plastic aquarium plants are fine as long as you check them for any sharp or pointy bits that may hurt your friend. We have them in with our three and they like them lots. We have some live plants as well which we find help keep the tank health. Good luck.

1. Yes, this is where the water has more oxygen. As long as he isn't struggling to get to the bottom, it's not a concern.

2. Like 2gsom said, look for pointy bits. I prefer silk, just because they look less fake. If you can keep live plants, go for it. I have a black thumb, and they all die. lol.

3. If you have a lid, up to the top. If you don't have a lid, try to keep 2-3 inches from the top, in case you have a jumper.

4. Bubbles are fine, as long as there isn't a strong current in the tank.

5. Fans are great as a means of cooling if necessary.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
