My neon axolotl is very chill, just walks around the bottom and hangs out. However, my other one, a leucistic, will relax half the time and be freaking out the other half(ie. swimming really fast and running his face along walls. It also seems to try to jump out of the water. It swims really fast to the top over and over, not even taking a breathe. It has always done this. It has actually cut itself on the thermometer now. So i am wondering what i can do to help it calm down.
Temp~65-68 F
Ammonia good
ph good
Dont know their genders
both about 4-5 inches

You mentioned that you tested Ammonia, what about Nitrite and Nitrate levels? While these two are less toxic than Ammonia, if they are high then they could be the reason for the erratic behaviour. Otherwise the leucistic one may just be more sensitive to something in the water or it's naturally hyperactive :p One of mine did the same thing for a while when the tank was cycling but he's calmed down a lot now.

If anyone wanted a resolution other than me, i have deduced that it was that it/he/she is reacting to the "quick start" tank cycling solution i put in. I figured it wasnt hurting it/he/she because the other didnt care and it/he/she stopped as time went on.

Could he/she just be easily startled? I know one of mine goes ape if their tankmate so much as makes a splash at the water surface (mine surface feed) and likewise my water quality is always good.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
