Hey there all, this is my first post. Long story short I just moved my Axolotl from home to my dorm in college which is in south eastern MA, the temperature around here has been declining most days its mid 70s but declining readily, I have several reef fans on my 10g which is home to my axo, these worked fine in collaboration with air condition in my home however I overestimated the power that they have, once I got the tank established a the temperature quickly went from mid 60,s to about 72. I kept my Axo in the fridge last night, and am planning keeping up with the 100% daily water changed ect. what advice does Cuadata have for me? what should I do next?

thanks,

My advice, stop panicking...do not love your pet to death.

Unless your water is constantly in the 80F or higher range, you have nothing to worry about.

Perhaps you should re-read the axolotl site and the forums a bit...

I agree with Johnny. You can keep them in the low 70's without too much issue.

The biggest thing is that you need to have consistent temperatures, even if they're a little out of ideal. It's not beneficial for your axolotl to be in and out of the fridge, going from cold to warm and back.

When I first had my two axolotls they were kept around 73-74 degrees since that was the average temperature in my bedroom and they were there for around 6-8 months with no problem.

Thanks a lot everyone, apparently I was misinformed I thought anything over 70 could mean certain death for Axos, regardless he is back in his tank and doing well.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
