Hello Gang,

Once upon a time I had a steady population of snails in my Chinese Fire Bellied Newt tank, but now I can't keep a steady group in there. I always assumed the newts were eating the snails. My question is are snails okay for newts to eat or what are others experiences with snails and newts have you guys had. The snails I add are the regular pond and ram snails that constantly breed in my Cherry Shrimp tank. I just don't want them to choke on a snail or have trouble digesting it.

Thanks in advance.

I've got ramshorn and pond snails together with H.orientalis and all my other newts. Some newt species eat the snails and I think they're an excellent treat. I don't know if FBNs are eating them.

I've seen 2 of my larger female CFBN eating smaller snails. I always thought they must be munching them as I seemed to have snail eggs and large snails, all the in between sizes of snails were missing.

Cool, I watch them, but I never see them actually eating the smails. I figured they were okay to eat as they probably see something like them in their natural habitat, but figured it was worth asking about. Thanks for the responses.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
