Hey, I was wondering if there was any recommended sand to use for the bottom of my lotl's tank? Is there any particular special sand I need? Also, is there any sand that wont make the water cloudy either?:D

Hi there, the best sand is silica sand, you can use children's play sand (available from bunnings for 9$) or there's pool filter sand which I've heard is good, expensive and you've got to watch out for some additives. Basically you don't want sand that's "calcium" based or anything with iron. All sand will cloud but settles within about a day or two :) Also look out for "moon Sand" which has very jaggered pieces,I personally love bunnings for sand, i have green coloured sand for my tank :)

Thanks! :)
Does your axolotl like the sand or do they find it difficult to walk? So this sand won't float at all in the water and little shards won't irritate its eyes or skin or anything?

I find my axie likes the sand better. Nope once its in and water's poured in its all good. My advice would be let it settle for a day or over night with the filter running just so you don't have the small grains floating. :)

Totally agree that Bunnings play sand is great for Axolotl tanks. I would however say that if you wash it really well to start with you shouldn't have to let it settle at all and it won't cloud the water either. Spend the time to wash it really well and in small batches and you shouldn't have to worry about it ever again.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
