Hey guys, so I have been using the Caudata search thing a lot and have been able to answer most of my questions. But this on I could not. I could not find a decent picture of a gravid axolotl. I was wondering if she is full of eggs? Or just a lardo?

Thanks

Evan

She looks very healthy, I dont think she is full of eggs.
I have 2 females an both are as fat as your axie ;)

From my understanding, females carry unfertilized eggs with them until they breed, so yes I think she may have eggs inside her. If they were fertilized, then she would get a bit bigger, then lay them.

Here she is now. I saw spermatophores in the aquarium a few days ago. Yet I don't think she picked any up.

She might lay soon. Be prepared to hatch or or sell (or cull) the eggs. If you saw spermatophores, she may have picked up one (which is all it takes). Just be prepared for it.

if there was spermatophores, It can almost guaranteed that she's expecting.

thats how it was with mine, I thought that my female was just getting too much food, so I cut back. she then started spawning and I felt bad for cutting back her food. I missed the spermatophores because the tank has heaps of fake plants in it.

I think it all varies with the axolotl though. So far in both of my tanks my males have laid sperm three times all over the tank and my females did not seem interested at all.

SHE SPAWNED!! There are about 60 eggs right now. They look like they have just been laid. She is huge and here cloaca is still very swollen so I think there may be more. Will update when I have all the eggs in another tank.

OMG!!! Not this article again. I must have read it 8 or 9 times before I even got the female. If it had the words "eggs" or "axolotl breeding" on it it was read.

How amazing, keep this thread updated! I'd love to see them develop if you choose to raise them :)

The next two or three weeks until they hatch will seem like a year. Once they hatch you wish they were back in the egg as there is lots to do. All good fun though and exciting to see what colours you get in the young. Good luck

Regards Neil

I removed all the eggs from the live plants and put in plastic plants. There are about 190 eggs so far and she is still going. She is still so fat.

Thanks all

Evan

So now the Eggs are kept in old jewelry boxes 2 to a little section. They will live until this way until they have their front legs and are about an inch and half to 2 inches long. Then I'll move them all into a really big tub where they will develop their back legs. Then I will start selling them. I have about 215 growing

More pics of one of the developing larvae. More pics soon. I wish I could post more than 1 pic at a time from my iPad.

They are all growing so well. When will the gold, leucistic, and wild type traits start showing?

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
