I just got the ok from my girlfriend to begin looking for a new tank for our axies mainly because she has fallen in love with them as much as I am. Our current tank is roughly 48 L X 12 W X 21 H. I am looking into either having a custom tank made or buying one with more floor space then we currently have. A few different tank size options which are:

70 Wide- 48 X 24 X 13
70 Square- 30 X 30 X 17
100 Wide- 72 X 24 X 13

Or I have been debating on spending the time and money and doing a custom made acrylic aquarium which would be 36 X 36 X 14.

I am torn as to which to do because I am unsure of the cost of building my own aquarium and seeing as how this is only part of my Christmas present and a fox (yes a domesticated fox) is my other gift I am unsure which to go with.

In my opinion it's always best to go as large as you possibly can. Floor space is more important than depth for axies. I moved my guys from three tanks into a 6ftx2ftx2ft and have never seen them happier. :)

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
