So i have just had some fungal problems and have put my lotl in the fridge and started salt baths. I was wondering if i should scrub down the tank to make sure theres no traces left and whether i should change the filter media.

thanks

Have you checked the water quality and temperature? Fungus usually occurs when something is causing stress to the axolotl, weakening their immunity, rather than breeding in the filter media.

yeah it was an issue with temperature. I am investing in a water cooler just curious as to whether there are other precautions i should take before reintroducing the lotl

Well being as it's temperature related, I wouldn't pull your whole tank apart as obviously it will disrupt your cycle but instead do a partial water change, maybe several while your axolotl is being fridged. Keep up with the salt baths until your sure the fungus has cleared, and even for several days after. Once axie is ready to be introduced to the tank, gradually add small amounts of tank water to their container over a period of several days so he can re-adjust to the quality of the water. Try and get the container and tank water the same temperature so shock can be avoided. This is simply achieved by bottling tank water and popping it in the fridge. Remember to let him warm up before putting him back in the tank as obviously the tank and container water will be completely different temps.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
