Question: New tank set-up: One axi or two?

Hi there. I have just set up a new 2ft long 60L (15 gallon) tank. It's not cycled yet, but has been treated for chlorine. I have a sponge filter which seems to also double as an aerator and about 2 hides. I have just one question: good enough for 1 axolotl or 2? And just to double check with experts, my current tank conditions are:

ph: 7.4
ammonia: 0.25
nitrite: 0
nitrate: 5.0

Will you be getting juveniles or adults, I think 15 gallons is okay for one adult but is okay as a temporary home for 2 little lotl's, however if you're buying two, its probably easier to get them into a big tank now rather than later so if you plan to keep your tank, one is enough :)

I was hoping to get 2 juveniles about 10 cm long from a member on here, Lady Rassilon, but since I can't fit a bigger tank in my place, guess I will just get 1. Thanks for the advice.
I'm guessing my set-up is ok and the tank perimeters are normal? How long should I let the tank sit for until I get an axi?

You will want to cycle your tank fully before you add your axie, or you can do a "axie in" cycle but it's much harder. You always want your ammonia to be at .00 which will happen when your tank is fully cycled, there are a few good articles on here and elsewhere on how to properly cycle a tank. You may want to add some "closed in" hides

I know that cycling a tank with an axi in it, is bad, hence I asked how long I should let the tank sit until I put an axi in it. I guess I will just have to check the water perimeters once a day and find out. The problem with a closed hide is, its expensive for me. I can't afford the amount that pet shops want for a nice looking closed hide or at least not for another two weeks. I am still waiting for the chiller, so there's time yet.

Thanks for the advice :)

I found the extra cash, so I bought a couple more things for the tank, including a hide (the barrel looking thing) and some more plants to make the tank darker and protect the axi (when I get one) from my bright kitchen light :)

I'm glad someone likes it :) Now all I have to do is wait for this damn chiller to come from Hong Kong and I'll go pick me up an axi :) Thanks for all your advice and help Olivia97.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
