Hey guys,

I recently made the switch from beef heart cubes to worms on the advice of much wiser people here, just wondering how often I should feed my axies now?
The worms are about 5 cm's (2 inches) long if that makes a difference.
Hope to hear from you soon! Dont want them starving ;)

It's hard to say without knowing the age and/or size of your axolotls. My juveniles receive a couple of small earthworms daily until they reach roughly 5 and a half inches. I then gradually reduce their feeding down to 3 times a week; a couple of good sized earthworms each and some shared bloodworm thrown into the mix.

they're roughly 16 - 18 cms? (around 6 or 7 inches). They have black toes which I thought was an indication of maturity

The best answer is: it depends.

It depends on how warm your tank is, how fat your axies are, etc. Ideally, you're going for a belly as wide as their head, or a little bigger (especially for females). If it's winter, you might get away with feeding them as little as 2 worms a week. In the summer, it might be 2 worms 3x a week.

Thanks guys!
It's helpful to have some parameters at least to work inside so that I'm not way off the mark

Mine are about 5 inches long and they get a worm every other day or sometimes a cube of frozen bloodworms between them for a change. They look pretty chunky just after they have eaten a worm! The ones I am getting can be almost as long as the axies when they stretch out but this doesn't seem to be a problem for them.

I feed the Doctor - who is currently about 9" long - two worms (about 2" long, 1/4" diameter) every few days. I often tweezer-feed the first and then just drop the second in. Sometimes there is still a worm wandering around the next day, sometimes he eats both within minutes.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
