Hey everyone, I'm Zack and I'm new to the forum. I'm a sophomore in high school in New Jersey. I'm really interested in amphibians and animals in general, so I decided to join the forum. I've never really had any amphibians as a pet (aside from frogs in my backyard), but I had a red-eared slider for 7 years. He passed recently ( :( ), so I've been thinking about what to do with the now empty tank in my room. My tank is a 40 gallon breeder tank, about 2.5 ft x 1.5 ft x 1 ft. Any suggestions for a beginner? I'm more interested in fully aquatic animals like axolotls(illegal here of course  ). Are there any that are esy to take care of and legal in New Jersey?

Depending on who you ask, either a.) all ambystomatids, or b.) all 'tiger salamanders' [axolotls included as a former subspecies] are illegal. This also spreads into anything that could remotely resemble a tiger salamander, like Necturus.

Have you thought about something like Pleurodeles waltl? They're hardy, fully aquatic, and full of personality. You could keep 4 or 5 in a 40 breeder.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
