Hi, I'm new here, but I've had my axolotl since may of thise year. He's about 6 inches long now and I recently read somewhere that I should not be feeding him fish food. I'm about out of the food I was given (not fish food) when I got the little guy, and I need to find some food I can buy in a pet store that I can feed him easily. I moved, so the local place I got the food from isn't really an option. I'm a really busy grad student and don't really have time to make a worm farm or grow my own daphnia or anything fancy like that.
Any suggestions?

At 6 inches, he's far too big for daphnia anyway.

Earthworms really are the best food. You can get them from most pet shops, bait shops, walmart, gas stations, etc.

Earthworms, frozen bloodworms, frozen brine shrimp, salmon/trout pellets...all are great food items. Stay away from crickets, mealworms, goldfish, etc.
Earthworms are a full supplement, you can feed axolotls 100% earthworms and they will be happy and healthy.

Thanks very much for the reply! Should I cut earthworms in half before feeding him? He tried to eat pieces of food that are WAY too big for his mouth. If you have any other advice about feeding them when they get bigger I would gladly read it! If there's any of my pets I'd like to spoil it's my axolotl!

It depends on the size of your worms. A 6 inch axolotl can usually take an earthworm that's as long as it's body with no problem.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
