Ideal Tank Dimensions

Does anyone have any experience building their own aquariums? I have seen lots of info on how to do it and I was wondering...

If you were to design a tank for a single axie, what would the dimensions be? How tall would it be, do axies need deep water? What would the width and length be? It seems that a more square shaped tank rather than the long skinny ones would be better.

Any ideas?

For axolotls, depth is not very important, unless you like it for aesthetic reason. I agree that squarish is better for the animals. But most commercial tanks are long and skinny for a reason - it looks better as a display.

For a single full-grown axolotl, a standard 15 gal (24x12x12) or 20 gal (24x12x18high) works well. Larger is always better, of course, so take those dimensions as a starting point.

If you are serious about building the tank yourself, don't take any shortcuts. The thickness of the glass and other aspects of structural stability are very important. If cost is the reason you are considering building your own, it's not too hard to find used tanks.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
