Tank size for axies

So with axolotls, theres a 10 gallon per axie rule right? I just want to make sure I have enough room when time comes

I have a 20 gallon long tank right now. So im curious how many adults would be able to live in there peacefully? Id think 2 would be okay but wondered if I would be pushing it with 3? I do plan on picking up more tanks though, just waiting until I can find some good bargans for bigger tanks!

With a 20-long, you'd probably be pushing it with 2. Considering an adult could get over 12 inches long, it may be a tight fit.

With axolotls, surface area (or floor space) is most important, as they spend most of their time on the bottom (not in the water column). So you want at least a foot of tank per axolotl. You'd want at least a 3 foot tank for 3 axolotls.

Keep in mind, bigger is almost always better! You'll have more space to provide hides, and a larger water volume buffers against water quality issues.

Im gonna try to find a 75 gal or bigger and stick with a pair of axies!

petco has a $1/gallon tank sale going on now up to 55 gallons. $40 for a 40 gallon breeder would be a great buy and plenty of room for 2-3 axolotls.

This is what Caudata Culture has to say about tank sizes and such:

...Even when a tank doesn’t look crowded, it may have more animals than the carrying capacity of the water allows. As an example, a 10-gallon tank can support about 12 inches of animal (three 4-inch newts, for example), and a 15-20 gallon tank can easily support about 16 inches of animal. These figures assume that the tank is at least 2/3rds full of water. Any fish or other animals in the tank also count toward the total. Any animals beyond this could result in overcrowding...

This seems to be at least a good starting place for a golden rule in tank sizing/populating.
