I have noticed my golden albino axie has gotten very fat. I am wondering if it would be a good idea to put her in a tank by her self so when she spawns I can put her back in her main tank and keep the eggs in the old 2 footer. The problem is I don;t know if shes fertile or not. Is there any way to tell if an axie is pregnant with fertile eggs? I know the mating precedure but I don't know when there actually fertile. Does anyone have any tips?

First of all you will have to have a male in the same tank as her. The breeding season for axolotls is usually winter/spring although spawnings at other times are quite common. You will usually observe spermatophores scattered around the tank a day or two before spawning and there is usually plenty of chasing and nudging by the adults when they are in the mood. Saying this plenty of keepers check their tank to find eggs everywhere without actually observing any of the above. I would keep a close watch on the tank and if you see any spermatophores then assume mating has taken place and move the female to the other tank. If no eggs are laid after a couple of days then put her back in the main tank and try again. Be very careful and gentle though if you are moving a female full of eggs.

I have 2 female and 1 male axies and my male axie tried this before when I only had one female. The lats spawn was unsuccessful as there were issues with it being the firs lay. It is summer here in australia and it isn;t normal for them to reproduce though it isn;t normal to have such a fat female axie either.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
