I have a breeding pair of I.a.alpestris. The female is fine, chunky and healthy.
The male,looks emaciated.
I feed them chopped earthworms, bloodworm (live or frozen),daphnia and the occasional chopped wax worm.
Tank wise, lots of live plants, sponge filter, been established well over a year,no ammonia etc.
The male just either spits the food back up or avoids it completely,he did eat some wax worm recently but that was it.
I don't really want to keep feeding him waxworm but would it be ok to fed him on until he gains a little weight?
Another suggestions?
Here's a few pictures of him

From the side he doesn't look too bad but from the top you can see his pelvic bones....unless that's something else.
Thankyou for your help.

If he won't eat anything but waxworms, then give him waxworms! He needs to put on weight first, then worry about his cholesterol second.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
