I've just put my axolotl in his new tank, he went a bit nutty at first then calmed down but then I noticed a red mark on his tail can anyone tell me what's happened

He probably banged it on something. Think of it as an axolotl bruise.

Less than a year ago I had a juvenile display tank golden returned by my local petshop, as the wild type (similar size) had left him with no legs, half a tail & some reduced gills! What a very sad sight.....
He now looks perfect again. EXTRAORDINARY powers of regeneration are what axolotls are famous for, & I have now seen it with my own eyes. All I did to help was feed well & add a good number of oak leaves (for the tannin) to his environment.

Your bruised axi should be fine!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
