Hello all!
Just this past Sunday, I FINALLY got an axolotl from a local animal expo.
Because I'm a new owner, I welcome respectful constructive criticism. :D Everything about my setup is based on what I read through my research prior to getting my little guy.

-I believe it's a male, based on the bump behind the rear legs

-I'm a little torn on whether it's a melanoid or a dark wild type. He's very very dark-all black, grey belly, and some spots on his tail.

-He is currently in a simple 10 gallon tank. As he gets older, I plan to move him into a 20 gallon long.

-Aquarium sand as the substrate

-temp is around 65F, which is room temperature.

-He has a cave to hide in, though he prefers to sit in the food bowl I have for him.

-Basic filtration for a 10 gallon, I put some fake plants under the water flow so it doesn't disturb the water or him.

-Some aquarium safe rocks are scattered about the tank, they're currently larger than his head, but as he gets older I'll be sure to remove them.

-I have a bubbler in there right now because my tank wasn't *quite* finished cycling, though it is now. I may remove that so he gets pretty long gills

-He eats a mixture of newt bites and frozen bloodworms (still figuring out his feeding schedule)

-He's about 3.5in long

-I'm not sure if I'll be able to get a second axolotl in the future, as his back feet have different number of toes 5 on the right, 3 on the left. Doesn't this suggest he was with other axolotls during the cannibalistic stage and will forever be cannibalistic?

Hope I'm doing things right!
Thanks!

Hello and welcome!

People will want to see pictures ;).

On the face of it it sounds like you have a pretty good set up and one can NEVER have too many Axies!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
