Hey folks, I got my very first axolotl, Smudge, on Sunday.
He's currently 3.5in long, and by himself in a 10gallon tank.
As he gets older, I plan to move him to a 20gallon long.

I believe that he was kept with other axolotls during the cannibalistic stage, as he as an odd number of toes on his back feet. (5 on right, 3 on left).

I heard that because of this, they will be forever cannibalistic. However, I'm hearing of lots of people keeping a LOT of axolotls together.

I was curious, if a few years down the road I'm able to get a larger tank, should I get him some friends? Or would that stress him out after living by himself?

Thanks for reading!

Another axolotl is your preference. If you have enough space and resources, go right ahead. Even with adults you'll have to watch for nipping. Axolotls don't make friends, and as long as they're well fed and have enough space you shouldn't have any problems. They can and will eat each other at any stage of life under the right circumstances. Some axolotls can (rarely) develop morphological changes due to cannibalism, but that is highly unlikely. Your axolotl should be fine once it reaches adulthood, but you should always be careful when introducing new animals.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
