Just brought home the newest addiction feeding axolotl :) as yet unnamed but leaning towards Sunshine (yup sad I know!)

This is a Squishy sibling & until today has spent it's life in a goldfish bowl
(& not a very large one) fed on pellets & never had a worm! She/he is a good 1inch shorter than Squishy & needs fattening up :D I've been watching & it's interesting to see that the back legs barely function - lying against the tail - they can work but are very skinny & it seems like a learning curve to use them - I'm thinking this is from being in a bowl with no hide or traction & this guy has basically just swum around :-/ it'll be interesting to see how long the muscles take to gain tone. BOOT CAMP :D

Just saying Hi

What colour is this one? Golden Albino or wild type - I haven't seen the pink eye as much as a wild type eye - but this would be the first albino I've had so I'm confused ;)

I'm going to keep him separate until we can bulk up that skinny tummy!

Introducing >SUNBEAM< :D

In a matter of hours this little one has done nothing but eat

So far lots of live blackworms & I thought I'd offer an earthworm - it was inhaled & no chewing or spitting out then my tweezers were chased so I got another... Same thing gulped down like a starved beastie - one more offered & demolished 0.0 so that's 3 good sized worms & a teaspoon of live blackworms (although a lot are still in tank wriggling about) but wowzers the poor thing was starving & I'm so glad that its going to be easy to fatten this one up.. fast :)

Congratulations on your new kiddlet Nikki! You're house must be approaching zoo - all those axies are going to be soo happy when they get into that big tank!

I am going to take a wild swing and say it's a golden albino?? I wouldn't trust my judgement though :p

To give a bit of merit to my guess (from axolotl.org website):

"If it were homozygous for "a" (i.e. a/a), the animal's phenotype would be albino. Since "a" is recessive, both alleles need to be "a" in order for albinism to be expressed in the phenotype. Albinism results in a lack of eumelanin (the dark pigment). In axolotls, it also results in an increased number of xanthophores (yellow pigment cells)."

It's not a golden albino as the eyes are too dark. I'd say a light Copper.

Regards Neil

Thank you so much -
I'm not sure how to tell the difference

Whatever colour he/she is doesn't matter I think it's gorgeous :D
I've got soooo many pretty lotls to look at :) but then again I've never seen an ugly axolotl - they're all so cute :)

Couldn't have gone to a better home! These axolotls are lucky to have you :)

Hi,
I agree with Neil, it is a light copper. I looked after many of these and still have 20 left. They look identical to your pictures. However they are a bit more plump. They also have reflective gills and bodies as your new addition has.
I have found that they lighten as they get larger, most of mine are losing their spots, or they are not as obvious. They are almost the same colour as the albinos, apart from the eyes.
Enjoy your new addition, I'm sure he'll be fattened up and using his legs properly in no time.
Kerry

Sorry, couldn't post the older ones as they are on my other phone. They are in my album if you want to see how they have changed. He/she seems to really be enjoying worms now :)

I've attached a photo of a copper and a golden albino so you can see the difference in the eyes. They are both red (although this is not always immediately apparent in some coppers) but the golden albino has a very light red eye while the copper's will appear much darker. Hope this helps.

Thanks again :)

I agree definitely copper as they are very dark - I only hope he grows up to be a gorgeous as some of the other coppers I've seen on here & if the ones in the pics are yours they are just lovely!

Wow! What a fantastic rescue!

Not really rescued - just rehomed :)

The lady who bred them all did love them a lot, although the bowl was a 'temp' home it ended up being in it for 4 months! I'm sad she never fed worms, i had sent her links to here & told her how good earthworms are for them. My squishy is a sibling to this one & I'll be picking up another one from her in the next month or so. They're moving overseas but her little girl was so sad to say goodbye to her pinky that I said I could pick it up just before they leave. At least that one is in a proper tank (albeit a bit small) so that's another addition due soon o_O

Lucky this weekend is all about setting up the 6 footer - it'll be great to see them all in there :)

Sunbeam has grown well & taken to earthworms like a Dyson vacuum :)

She's in the big tank with her sibling squishy & splat :) I added another hide & more escape paths & it has gone really well. They all hang out in the same corner together - but separate :)

I've only just seen this thread- what a beautiful axolotl! Did you use a divider when you first introduced it to Squishy and Splatt? I'm hoping to put Churro in with Taco soon but am really nervous as they have both always lived alone.

Lol! Was looking at the pics and was like "Is that Missy..." Seems that the eye shadows are a genetic thing :D (She incidentally also says "hi" to all the siblings :D)

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
