Hello

First post. I have four hatchlings that are about 5 weeks old. Just over an inch.

They have just gotten onto bloodworms and can slurp down a whole 3/4" inch worm.

How often should they be fed per day and how many bloodworms a day?

Thanks
k.

What Kaysie said is right on. In a vernal pond that may dry up, he who grows the fastest can eat his brothers and sister. lol. Its a servival of the fittest. Granted axolotl are not generally breeding in vernal ponds but you get the idea.

I feed mine as much as they will eat in a 5-10 minute feeding.

I'm bad... every time I walk by my axies in their containers, I see if they want any. They'll literally tilt their heads wayyy up, and that's the signal they want something!

They're opportunistic feeders (and shameless beggars). Most will eat whenever food is offered.

At that size I leave food in the tank for them 24/7, preferably live food. Just keep on top of the water quality if you are using bbs.

So is it harmful to feed them all the same amount to try and keep all their growth rates aprox the same? (after taking the average from a few five minutes feedings)

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
