Hello. I am using a sponge filter in a 10 gal. tank with 1 axl. It works good but I was thinking of changing to a submersible filter (fluvel) How do I add the new filter ? Can I just take out the sponge filter and replace it with the new filter or will that stress my axl? There are 2 fake plants and a few large stones in the tank, but I am worried about the bacteria for the new filter. Should it be run in another tank first ? Thanks for any advice. Denise

Can you run them both at the same time in the tank for a while?

The sponge filter shouldn't create much disturbance & if you use the spray bar option with the fluval & angle it against the glass it should be fine :)

I'd do what Nikki said. I'd have them both in there for a while so you can give the new filter time to establish and not have to worry about your water.

Ok, thanks so much. I can do that.

Perhaps have both going long-term...That way you have plenty of biological filtration, as well as a decent source of mechanical filtration. Hope to see pics of your tank soon!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
