I got my axolotls from someone who claimed to be a breeder so it seems unlikely that they would be anything other than axolotls unless he lied in which case I need to know if I should change my aquarium setup. They lost their gills and are spending a lot of time breathing air they no longer have the fin like tail either. All these point to salamander but I just wanted to check so I don't end up killing them because of lack of water. I attached a picture below.

I agree, tiger salamanders. Your "breeder" didn't breed them. Unless you consider someone who has access to a pond with a breeding population to be a "breeder".

Be sure there are plenty of islands in the tank as they change; they could actually drown if they are ready to leave the water and there is no place to go.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
