Hi everyone,

Just wanted to stop by and introduce myself. I'm currently a grad student in coastal SC, originally from Indiana. I started fieldherping with some friends during my undergraduate career. I really enjoy learning about amphibians and reptiles and working on my "life list". I am interested in science, but my real motivation in studying these things is that I would like to surround myself with as much art and beauty as I can ( and I think salamanders are some of the most beautiful organisms on the earth!). I'm still an amateur, trying to learn what works (both in the field and with photography).

I don't currently own any caudates, but I'm looking to get started in the near future. Possibly with an axolotl tank...

I look forward to getting to know others. This forum seems like an excellent place to gain some knowledge in a friendly setting.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
