Hello. I tested my 10 gal. tank that I have had for about 6 months with 1 axl. I use a sponge filter. Here , are my results: ph- 7.6, Amonia- .25, nitrite-0, nitrate- 20. I figures the amonia should be lower, but not sure how to get it down. Do some partial water changes? If so, how many and how often? Is there a listing of normal values for axls somewhere? Thank you for your help. Denise

Ok, thanks. I did ~30% water change last night. I did read that guide, but I didn't see normal values in it. Are my other values ok? Once the values are normal, how often do most people test the water ? Thanks again...

Here's the values I have listed in my notes:
1. Nitrite: Toxic. Want at 0.
2. Nitrate: End product of cycling process. Non-toxic in low levels through partial water changes. Want at less than 60.
3. Ammonia: highly toxic. You want it at 0.
4. PH: 6.5-8.0 (7.4-7.6 = Ideal)

I would recommend checking more often as you try to lower your ammonia and then after that, bi-weekly to once a month. I think the general rule is that it's better to check it more often than not, so that you can catch something wrong as soon as possible.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
