Hi there,
I've only just tested for water hardness. My tap water has a PH of 7 and my KH and GH results were both 4 degrees. Apologies if that is not written correctly, I have my L plates on here.
I have tested for this as I have noticed that after 2 days my juveniles in plastic tubs start looking anemic. So up until now I just change their water after testing their water and realised that the PH has dropped below 6.5. On one occasion it was down to 6.
So I am thinking that I may need to add some salts but am really not sure about this. Does anyone have any tips?

pH 6.0 isn't dangerously low. If you can do large water changes, they should be OK. For a long-term aquarium setup, you may need to make some adjustment, such as buffering the water with some limestone rock or other source of calcium carbonate. If you do a forum search for hardness, you'll find lots of previous discussions.

Thanks so much. I will do a search. I have been worried about this.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
