Hello everyone,

I've kept axolotls for about 2 years now and stumbled across this site while researching ripariums.

Hello and welcome aboard! :D

Glad you found us, what Axies do you have?

I've got 2 wildtypes (Bump & Swamp Monster), 2 golden albinos (Phoenix & Speckles) and 2 pink albinos (Angel & Lottie).
Speckles and Swamp Monster are currently in a 36"x12"x18" while the weather is cold and the others are in a 60"x18"x24". When their water warms up by 2-3 degrees in late spring Speckles and Swamp Monster can go back into the main tank, but at 13-14 degrees I find they start trying to engage in unwanted breeding!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
