Hi All,
I have come to Caudata.org to learn as much as I can about salamanders in general and native wild salamanders in particular My neighbor’s son, 8-year-old Adam brought me a rock covered in what we later learned were salamander eggs. He found them in a neglected stream in our neighborhood. We placed the eggs, rock and all in a large bucket with water from the stream. I replace that water every few days. We have kept them for almost 3 weeks now and the eggs have grown from small white dots to actual tiny, salamander-like creatures still encased in the eggs. None have hatched so far, but every one of them shows movement.
We have moved the eggs from the bucket into a saucer with some 6” of water. The saucer is located in a moist, shady garden. My hope is to see the salamanders hatch and go free. We have had so much fun watching the eggs grow and develop; we just want to make sure that we do the right things to help them on their way.
I’m so glad to find this site because I have a lot to learn and I'm eager to hear any comments/suggestions. This is my first foray into salamander parenthood.
Thank you!
