Hey,

While doing water changes and feeding the larvae we're keeping in the lab, I noticed that one individual, a larval Pseudotriton ruber, had an irregular, dark band of discolored skin on its tail. This is not normal for this species, and is not normal for this individual. It didn't exhibit any other odd symptoms or discoloration, and has been eating.

I wanted to know if anyone had seen something similar with their animals? I wondered if it could possibly be un-sloughed skin? I'll be keeping an eye on this individual, and checking for similar symptoms in other animals in the lab.

UPDATE: Discolored tail

I checked on this individual this morning. The discolored band has proceeded towards the head. There is still no swelling, or edema, but there might be a little bit of pink/red towards the top of the band.

No one has any thoughts?

Update: Discolored tail

I checked on everyone in the lab today. The only change in the individual I've been concerned about is a pink-red line along the base of the dorsal fin. However, I've seen this line in healthy individuals, and have thought it to be caused by their efforts to squeeze beneath cover objects.

Perhaps this is just some sort of gradual change in color. No other symptoms have shown up, and it is eating well.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
