So I fed my little axolotl today and noticed that he picks up a lot of sand as he's eating. Then I noticed his sand was a bit bigger and less fine than the sand in my larger tank, is sand this size likely to hurt him? I don't want any impaction to happen, he's about 19cm long but most of that is his tail, he's only half the body size of my other two :(

I attached a picture of his head compared to the sand.

Hi there, I would think that yes your sand is a little too big for him to be 100% safe from impaction.

You should try to get something much finer to avoid problems. In the meantime, to avoid swallowing too much sand/gravel, you could try using a feeding jar, there are many threads on here relating to jars for feeding, I use them for my 2 little guys and it has saved a lot of mess and worry about them eating sand.

Thanks :) I've just got him a new tank so I'll get new, finer sand for that. In the meantime I'll try the feeding jar 'till his 2foot is done cycling :)

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
