As of right now, I'm using rocks. Most of them are huge in comparison to my Axolotl. But I was suggested to use sand instead. What kind of sand can I use?
I'll be heading towards a petstore the end of the month, and I was wondering what to buy! Thanks :)

Any sand substrate that is super fine.. no gravelly pieces. The best that I've found is silica/ silica coated.
Also, I keep hearing play sand works awesomely. Just make sure with whatever sand you get, you wash it, wash it again, wash it another time, go ahead and rewash it, then once more for giggles

Awesome, thanks! I use play sand for my hermit crabs, so I have a bunch of that laying around. :D

Do not use calcium-based sands (like reptile sand), or any sand designed for marine tanks. It has to be inert sand. Pool filter sand, children's play sand, and silica sand, are all fine.

I know all about the dangers of repti sand, from having hermit crabs. I stay faaar away from that stuff.
but yeah, I'm in the process of cleaning some play sand right now :)
Thanks everyone

My favorite sands to use are CaribSea sand products.
there are tons of colors and sizes. My local mom/pop pet store will special order me different kinds I find on the website

I've also used exoterra... I think its called river bed for turtles?
its an extremely fine sand... really almost silt.
It works well though, even for younger axies.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
