Hi Everyone! I was so thrilled to discover caudata.org when I was searching for more information on Axolotls! This website rocks! There is so much great information.

I became interested in axies several years ago when the local museum had a frog/amphibian exhibit that included a tank of young Axolotls. Both me and my 2 yr. old daughter were fascinated by the creatures! They were so friendly and adorable! Then I saw the sign that told what they were, and that they are an endangered species.... I thought, "well I won't be able to find them as a pet then". Only recently did I start thinking about them again and doing research.

I have kept all types of fish in the past( right now though, I have 2 comets & 1 Shubunkin goldfish). Currently, the only amphibian I have is a wild colored male African clawed frog.
I am looking forward to getting a few axies in the near future(babies are coming from Zaria917 - I can hardly wait!:D), and in the meantime I am getting ready a 55 gallon long tank for them. I plan on having it planted with a little community of guppies(for the occasional axie snack and added beauty). I'll be getting some nice natural colored pool filter sand from the local pool supply store for the substrate.

When I'm not thinking about my soon to be arriving Axolotls, I have plenty to keep me busy! I am an artist(oil, pencil), always trying to find more time to create. I have two beautiful daughters that I love spending time with and love sharing my hobbies with. Oh, and a husband too! He is being very understanding and tolerant of my axie obsession!

Bye for now - Looking forward to many great conversations on Caudata!

Welcome to the forum! If you keep at it you'll be an axie expert in no time. :)

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
