Okay, two of my babies have this weird thing going on where it looks like a big white thing is coming out if their stomachs. I want to know what this is so if I am doing something wrong I can fix it before more suffer. :( I have them in containers, and clean the water completely twice a day. Feed them BBS twice a day, they just hatched within the last 3 days. Please help. I am new to this, as you may have guessed. Sorry the pictures are a bit blurry.

do they still have egg yolks with them? if so then it popped.or could be a prolapse , but it is impossible!
If not sorry I cant help much , i never had a baby axolotls before
i really think 3 days then i really think it could correct it by himself

It's tricky to tell from the pictures. Does it look like it's growing on them or actually coming out of them?

What sort of water do you use and how do you clean them out? Do you scrub the container or just change the water?

It looks like it is coming out of them. It seems a little bloody. I use conditioned water that I let sit for a day or two. I transfer them into a new container that was washed out. I clean the water two hours after each feeding.

I think you're just going to have to watch and wait for the moment :(

I would definitely take them out and put them in separate containers for now.

Can you take a couple more pictures--closer up of the white areas? I can send them to a vet friend of mine to see if she has any ideas re: what might be going on.

Sharon

I took a few more pictures as best as I could. I only have my phone to take them Thank you so much!

I just sent the email with pictures attached and your description of what's going on. I'll let you know as soon as I hear something back. How are they doing?

Thank you so much! They are doing well, they are acting normal like the rest, eating and everything.

Kristen , I really think its a genetic deformity , but they can survive no worries. And also if they are showing good sign then theyre fine , just update us when something is strange in their behavior. I even got some "frogaxolotl" which means my frog tadpoles has all complete legs and never lost its tail and it dies in a month or so which is just weird.I know you love em but its a genetic deformity.

I haven't heard back from the vet yet, but I did show the pictures to one of my friends that knows a bit about caudates. He said the same thing--that it seems like a genetic thing.

I agree.

If they're eating and pooping, you can just wait and see what happens.

The poor little thing died this morning. :(

Sorry to hear that my tadpoles with deformity also died yesterday , they rarely survive , but we cant do anything its done and its a genetic disorder it's made naturally and cant re edit it

It's very sad, but I'm glad he isn't suffering anymore, it looked like it was very painful. Plus, I now have 86 live babies, all but 2 are doing well. One is deformed as well, but more just not completely developed, but he is a trooper. And the other, I'm not sure what is wrong with him, he just doesn't swim or eat or anything, but I have him in a separate container to help him out a bit.

I didn't realize how much work they would be with two water changes and feedings each day, but I love every second of it!

Thanks to everyone for your help!

Wait until they get bigger and you've got 40 tubs to change.

Oh my gosh, that is going to be insane. Haha. Oh well, I'm a momma now, gotta take care of my babies! lol

Yes you'll be busy cleaning and scrubbing out all the containers, however then the hardest part is finding good homes for the babies. Next time around I'll be rearing 20 at the most. Enjoy your babies, I have loved every minute of it and it sounds like you will too.

I'm going to be a protective mother when it is time to find them good homes. Haha. I love every second of it so far! The letting go will be hard though. I ordered only 30 eggs, but almost 90 hatched.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
